Maine
The 131st Maine Legislature adjourned for the year just after 10 p.m. on Friday May 10, 2024. The legislature is now on break for the rest of the year and will not return until the 132nd Legislature convenes in December 2024. This is a campaign year where all members of the legislature are up for reelection and both presiding officers are termed out, so there will be brand new leadership in both chambers in the next session.
Vermont
The 2024 Vermont General Assembly adjourned for the year on Monday, June 17, 2024. The General Assembly is now on break for the rest of the year and will not return until January 2025. Similar to Maine, this is an election year where all members of the Vermont General Assembly (House and Senate) are up for reelection. Vermont does not have term limits and the Democrats currently enjoy a super majority in both the House and Senate, It is expected that there will a few changes in seat representation but the Speaker of the House and the President Pro Temp (Senate) will be returning to lead their respective bodies for another term.
The 2024 legislative session was the PLC’s first in Vermont representing timber harvesting and trucking members. Overall, it was a proved to be very successful as the PLC advocated to: 1) include $1 million in the state budget for contractors to draw down funds for water quality protection projects; 2) change the state’s timber trespass statute to create a criminal penalty for habitual offenders; 3) change a Vermont Economic Development Authority loan program to allow logging contractors to apply; and 4) influence right to repair legislation. Members of the PLC also now have three seats on Vermont’s Strategic Roadmap Implementation Committee.
