Advancing Responsible, Safe, Skilled Logging & Trucking Through Education and Training

The Mechanized Logging Operations and Forest Trucking (MLOFT) program, was developed in collaboration with three Maine Community Colleges, addresses the growing demand for skilled operators in the logging industry. MLOFT is a 20 week program that includes 12 weeks of training to operate mechanized logging equipment and 8 weeks of training for a commercial driver’s license (CDL). Students are trained to be proficient, safety-conscious, and an integral member of a high-performance harvesting team. The comprehensive program includes: operating logging equipment and trucks, tree identification, tree utilization & merchandizing, best management practices, trail layout, job site & yard setup/organization, and hydraulic hose & fitting identification.

A need for more skilled truck drivers in the industry was identified by members. A 3-day in-person (or online) training course is now offered to meet the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) training requirement. This course includes the information necessary to take and pass the state CDL permit test.

Many high schools in the region offer programs that introduce students to logging operations, chainsaw safety, and timber harvesting. Students from these programs are invited to PLC’s annual safety workshops and are encouraged to enroll in MLOFT upon graduation to secure a career in the logging industry.
