Maine tree award to be renamed for warden

AUGUSTA  – A former Maine tree warden who cared for a giant elm nicknamed “Herbie” that grew to be the largest American elm in New England is being recognized for his years of work with trees.

The Maine Forest Service is dedicating its annual community forestry excellence award to 101-year-old Frank Knight, a former tree warden in Yarmouth who tended to “Herbie” for decades before the tree was cut down in January after succumbing to disease.
